- Most numbers show no number or gender agreement with the nouns they refer to: cuatro libros, cuatro chicas
- The form uno or the -uno ending (veintiuno, etc.) appears only as a pronoun, the referent noun is not present.
- Yo tengo dos hermanos y Pablo tiene uno.
- Before a masculine noun, it shortens to un, -ún:
- un diccionario, veintiún alumnos
- Una (-una) is used before feminine nouns: una chica; veintiuna bibliotecas
- The three-word forms (16-19, 21-29) are more formal and less common.

| ORDINAL NUMBERS (top of page) (practice) |
| |
- Spanish ordinal numbers can be used as adjectives (la segunda novela) or pronouns (la segunda-the second one).
- When used as adjectives, they most often precede the noun:
- They are less used overall than in English: for example, dates, except the first (el primero) are expressed with cardinal numbers: el tres de mayo, etc.
- Use above 10th for any purpose is far less frequent than in English; cardinal numbers
are generally used instead:
El cuarto piso, but el piso once
- When combined with a cardinal* number, the order is the reverse of English:
- Los dos* primeros capítulos The first two chapters
