1000 Jahre Deutsche Literatur (Second Edition)

"1,000 Jahre Deutsche Literatur does a marvelous job of presenting literary texts within their cultural contexts, including an excellent overview of the history of the German Language from Germanic times to the Enlightenment. Professor Clay's writing style is lively and accessible. The accompanying pedagogical exercises reinforce learning of the material, while also affording opportunities for independent thinking and reflection. This newly-revised edition should be a favorite for students and teachers alike."

Designed for courses in German literature at the third and fourth year college level. This second edition covers the first half of a German language literature survey course (750 A.D. - 1750 A.D.)  The second half of the course is covered in the companion text, Deutsche Literatur im Kontext by Waltraud Maierhofer and Astrid Klocke.

More than an anthology, this text contains carefully chosen readings meant to guide the student toward the appreciation of literature as a mirror of historical and cultural events in Germany and neighboring countries.

It is organized by historic period and includes numerous carefully chosen readings and support materials in which the cultural and historical background is seen as the driving force behind the literary creativity. The text also includes exercises and questions for each chapter.

A companion website for this book, developed by Dr. Franz-J. Wehage of Muskingum University, is available here.
