Sample Syllabi from Anne-Christine Rice

Tufts University has a 6-semester language requirement, followed by electives in literature and culture. French 1&2 are elementary French courses and are followed by French 3&4, which are intermediate courses that further the study of the language and start exposing students to short works of literature. French 21&22 are composition and conversation courses and combine more advanced grammar topics, expanded vocabulary, and the study of texts and films.

French 21 - Download sample syllabus

My section of French 21 is film-based, but includes the reading of Glaude Gueux by Victor Hugo and a thorough review of grammar. The syllabus attached is based on the 3rd edition of Cinema for French Conversation. The films were selected to expose students to a variety of time periods (3 historical films, 3 more recent ones), of genres (comedy, adventure, drama, love story), of directors and actors, and of language levels (the two extremes being Cyrano de Bergerac and L'esquive). Students are evaluated based on 4 exams, 1 final exam, 4 compositions, 1 oral presentation, homework (mostly the translations found in each chapter) and vocabulary quizzes. Active participation in class is essential.

French 22 - Download sample syllabus

My section of French 22 is film-based, but includes the reading of Le voyageur sans bagage by Jean Anouilh and La place by Annie Ernaux. We also finish our in-depth review of grammar in French 22. The syllabus attached is based on the 3rd edition of Cinema for French Conversation. The semester is articulated around 3 topics (strong women, the search for identity, the place of an individual in society) and the films were selected to enable meaningful discussions on these topics. Students are evaluated based on 3 exams, 1 final exam, 4 compositions, 1 oral presentation, homework (mostly the translations found in each chapter) and vocabulary quizzes. Active participation in class is essential.
